Great Musical Moments

Most casual music fans know bluesy singer-songwriter Keaton Simons as "Eric Roberts' stepson," which of course sells Keaton's talent short. But such a reputation must be particularly frustrating for Keaton considering that--as he revealed to Dr. Drew on this week's gripping episode of "Celebrity Rehab"

Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Eminem Top Amazon's Year-End Sales Lists Lady Antebellum, Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars also ranked high on e-commerce retailer's charts.

Hip-hop ranked high on Amazon's best-selling singles list for 2010, with Eminem and Nelly notching top spots, while country music reigned supreme on the best-selling albums list as Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum took the top two positions.
Katy Perry's "California Gurls" featuring Snoop Dogg took the top spot on the singles list. Rihanna appears on that list twice, as a collaborator on Em's "Love the Way You Lie," which landed at #2 behind Perry, and with "Only Girl (In the World)," which came in at #7. Bruno Mars ("Just the Way You Are"), Nelly ("Just a Dream") and Enrique Iglesias ("I Like It," featuring Pitbull) round out the top five singles list.
The e-commerce retailer released its year-end list of the top 20 best-selling music albums and singles for the sixth consecutive year.
Grammy contenders Taylor Swift (Speak Now) and Lady Antebellum (Need You Now) were the top two sellers on the albums list. Arcade Fire (The Suburbs), Susan Boyle (The Gift) and Eminem (Recovery) complete the top five.
Earlier this week, iTunes also released its year-end list: Em topped the albums list with Recovery and Train topped the singles list with "Hey Soul Sister."
The Detroit MC certainly had a good 2010. He was named MTV News' Hottest MC in the Game in October, and his "Love the Way You Lie" was named the #9 song of the year in our list of the top 25 songs of 2010.mtv.com

B.o.B Breaks Through: A VMA Cheat Sheet After nearly quitting the music business last year, the eclectic MC and songwriter from Atlanta shot to the top of the pop charts.

B.o.B isn't like most pop stars. He really isn't like most rap stars, either. But the guitar-strumming MC's mix of melodic rhymes and earnest songwriting has him up for a few Moonmen at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, which air live on September 12 at 9 p.m.Here's how he got to where he is today. The lanky lyricist grew up on a diet of Michael Jackson and Tina Turner, but when he got older, his tastes widened to include everything from the Beatles to Björk. That range wasn't necessarily evident on his early productions, but his woozy "Cloud 9" proved to be an underground gem that garnered the attention of key music industry folks, including T.I. and Atlantic Records; the Atlanta upstart is signed to that label through Tip's Grand Hustle imprint.
B.o.B had been championed as an heir to OutKast's Andre 3000 after he released a slew of mixtape material in the past few years that earned him a solid reputation within the hip-hop community. "I'll Be In the Sky," "Haterz Everywhere" and "Lonely People" were among the notable numbers from his street projects, which include the DJ Smallz-helmed Cloud 9, Who the F--- Is B.o.B and B.o.B vs Bobby Ray, which was backed by DJ Green Lantern and Don Cannon.
As he sat in an incubation stage, however, B.o.B soon found himself at the center of swirling rumors last year that he was quitting the music biz before his first album could be released.
But that turned out to be a small speed bump on his road to pop stardom. In 2010, the eclectic rapper — who late last year announced he would also go by his birth name, Bobby Ray — found everything finally coming together for him.
His Bruno Mars-assisted "Nothin' on You," with its saccharine-sweet vocals and flirtatious verses, shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, took a similar path, debuting at #1 on Billboard's albums chart.
His single with Paramore's Hayley Williams, "Airplanes," was a top five hit and his collaboration with Rivers Cuomo, "Magic," just entered the top 10. And after opening for Jay-Z and Eminem on Thursday (September 2) night, it seems like B.o.B can do no wrong these days. He earned a total of five VMA nominations: Best Male Video, Best Collaboration, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year.
We bet B.o.B will tell you himself that it pays to play different. mtv.com

Eminem, Jay-Z Joined By Dr. Dre, Drake At Historic Detroit Concert D12, 50 Cent and G-Unit, Young Jeezy also hit Comerica Park stage as Em, Hov unleash flurry of hits on first stop of Home and Home Tour.

Detroit hasn't screamed this loud at a baseball park since Kirk Gibson was hitting home runs in the 1984 World Series. Hip-hop history was made as Jay-Z and Eminem co-headlined the Motor City's Comerica Park (home of the D-Town Tigers for the past decade) on Thursday night (September 2), the first of two shows on consecutive nights. While Jay's high-grossing touring schedule helped him to top this year's Forbes' "Hip-Hop Cash King" list, Eminem took a much-needed sabbatical to deal with a myriad of personal issues. Now beyond his darkest hour, Em had one of his brightest moments ever onstage. Not only did he gift his hometown with a seemingly endless string of hits, he pulled off some major surprises. After D12, 50 Cent and the G-Unit — acts that fans likely expected — came out for performances with Em, Slim Shady pulled off a shocker. Dr. Dre came out, first stunning the people then delighting them with smashes After his name appeared on the Comerica big screen, the man heralded by many as the greatest producer of his time came out to the opening notes of his world-famous "Next Episode." Then the familiar first keys of "Still Dre" were played.
"Haters say Dre fell off," the Doc rapped. "How n---a? My last album was The Chronic."
After that, the Shady/Aftermath duo took it back to Dre's Chronic days with "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang."
"One, two, three and to the fo," Em rapped in Snoop's cadence.
" 'Cause you know we came to rip sh-- up!" Dre spit later.
Dr. Dre appeared to be in the best shape of his life. Wearing a T-shirt with the late Proof's face printed on it, Dre looked strong enough to end the Undertaker's undefeated streak at Wrestlemania.
"Got dammit, Detroit. Do I love you or what?" Eminem asked his fans. "Look what I brought out for you."
Em then told Dre he wanted him to feel the love; Detox chants followed.
"Deeee-tox. Deeee-tox," they yelled from the bleachers to the bullpen. Dre just smiled and said, "I'm Comin'!"
One would-be guest who couldn't attend for obvious reasons was Lil Wayne. But Shady made sure to salute Weezy after "No Love." And the Young Money flag did wave proudly in Detroit as Drake came out for "Forever" and gave a special nod to the Motor City.
"In Detroit, faded off the brown," Drake rapped.
"Nino!!!!" the crowd responded.
"I'm so honored to be here to tonight. This is history in the making. I want y'all to make some noise for the muthaf---in' legend that is Emimem."
Em's legend was largely built off his mastery of music and a catalog made for the kind of environment he played on Thursday: stadiums. The Detroit rapper has been making sing-along anthems throughout his career. Not just tracks you rap in the shower or in the car, but big records like "Sing for the Moment," "Stan" and "Cleaning Out My Closet" — tracks practically begging for an audience of tens of thousands holding lighters up. Em proved he still has that rare connection with his fanbase. Grown men took off their shirts and got rock-n-roll rowdy when he rapped.
"Got dammit, Detroit, I'm back," Em said early on in the night. "Did you miss me?"
It was clear that Em missed his fans as well. He was engaging, lively and energetic on this night. After the "Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me," Em thanked his fans again.
"I love you. This song is for you." "Not Afraid" followed. After screams of "encore, encore," Em brought out the Unit, D12 and Detroit legend Trick Trick who had earlier performed on "Lose Yourself."
Thursday's Home and Home show kicked off with B.o.B, who came back later for "Airplanes, Pt. 2," and set the tone with a quick set that included "Nothin' on You."
The audience was eventually alerted that the Jiggaman was 10 minutes away from showtime. Two clocks filled two oversize screens on the enormous stage while the Beastie Boys' "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" blared from the speakers. When the countdown hit "0," Jay rose from beneath the stage, the lyrically intricate "Dynasty Intro" being played by his band, the Roc Boys. Then a brief snippet of "Lucifer" played before Jay went into his jaw-dropping verse from Rick Ross' "Free Mason."
During "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)," Jay rhymed "this might need a verse from Jeezy." On cue, the Snowman came out for the "Dey Know" remix followed by "Soul Survivor." His mini-set ended with "Put on for My City" and "Lose My Mind."
After that though, it was the Jay hit parade — with assistance from Memphis Bleek. The Brooklyn duo rocked with a flurry of big records, including "You Don't Know," "99 Problems" and "(Originator 99)." During "Big Pimpin'," Jay delivered Pimp C's verse in the late UGK legend's cadence.
"What y'all know about them Deetroit boys?" Hov asked.
A tribute to hip-hop's fallen soldiers ensued, as the audience shouted in unison, "Prrrrrooooooooof!"
"I know y'all going through a lot, but Detroit has heart and Detroit will be back," Jay said.
Hov and Slim Shady shared but a few minutes of stage time as Jay emerged for "Renegade" during Em's set.
The Home and Home Tour continues Friday night (September 3) at Comerica Park and comes to the Bronx, New York, on September 13 and 14 at Yankee Stadium.mtv.com

Ke$ha Does Her Own Stunts In VMA Promo 'I thought I was gonna fall on my head, but I didn't,' the singer says.

Breakout poptress Ke$ha is up for three MTV Video Music Awards and is slated to present an award when the festivities kick off Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. The "Tik Tok" singer is sure to fit right in amid the typical VMA rowdiness, and even the promo for her appearance is chock-full of high-flying stunts and other craziness.

"The concept ... is I wake up, like a pimp, and I hear some noise, and there's like a wind coming through my boudoir doors, and I run to see what it is, and I just get shoved out by this gust of wind that's supposedly 'fate,' " Ke$ha said, setting up the clip. "Then, I start falling and falling through ... all of my experiences that got me to this point, which is attending the VMAs."
Creating the illusion of a free fall for the spot required Ke$ha to swing about on a harness, an experience that apparently looks way more fun than it feels.
"I did do all my own stunts today, and my vag hurts," Ke$ha griped. "It was kind of scary, because ... I was flying around." Being suspended may have been a bit harsh on her lady bits, but the singer said she's no novice when it comes to hanging around for her videos. "I have used some harnesses before [on] my video for 'Blah Blah Blah.' ... I'm into it."
Ke$ha may have some experience getting strapped into harnesses, but she also admitted that dangling from the contraption was the hardest part of filming. "I think the harness was scarier, only because it was immensely painful as well, and I couldn't touch the ground," she said. "I thought I was gonna fall on my head, but I didn't."
Ultimately, the "Your Love Is My Drug" singer wasn't sweating any of the potential risks of shooting the promo.
"I was only, like, 12 feet high," Ke$ha said. "Worst-case scenario: I just would have, like, broke an arm."mtv.com

Taylor Swift's 'Mine' Video: The Other Teenage Dream Taylor's fantasy of marriage and family offers a very different vision from Katy Perry's sexy romps.

It's interesting that the premiere of Taylor Swift's "Mine" video comes less than three weeks after the grand unveiling of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" clip. For all their differences, they are essentially about the same thing: the fantasies of young, thoroughly modern women.
Of course, those fantasies are about as different as the women presenting them. Perry's "Teenage Dream" is very much about the immediacy of pleasure, of fun and sexy romps on the beach and uninhibited road-trip adventures. Swift's version is quite the opposite: Hers is a dream buoyed by the satisfaction of the long-term, of a doting husband and towheaded children and white picket fences. They are two wildly dissimilar sides of the same coin: Perry wants to be free; Taylor wants a husband. And the one you tend to identify with probably says a lot about you.

To be clear, these certainly aren't the only two avenues available to women (not by a long shot), but if you want to get professorial about things, "Teenage Dream" and "Mine" offer up a rather interesting dissection of feminism in the 21st century. This is not to suggest that Perry or Swift are paragons of the movement, but they are two of the hugest pop(ish) stars on the planet, adored and idolized by millions. And certainly, a portion of those millions are young girls. So, really, there's probably something at stake here.
To that end, while I don't want to wade too heavily into the field of gender politics (these are, after all, just a pair of pop videos), it's interesting — if not sort of disappointing — that neither Perry nor Swift are seen running Fortune 500 companies or piloting Black Hawk helicopters in their videos. Those, it would seem, are Teenage Dreams of a different sort.
Of course, neither option is necessarily bad. Perry is empowered because she is totally unchained, free to pursue whatever (or whomever) she desires. Swift goes the opposite route in the "Mine" video, investing fully in the idea of love and family and the future. There may be bumps along the way — as she sings, there are bills to pay and late-night shouting matches, and suddenly, the big house doesn't seem all that attainable — but she's committed. She's in it for the long haul. It's not a particularly sexy dream, but it's certainly an admirable on, especially in these times.
With "Mine," Swift has basically set herself up as the anti-Perry. And in doing so, she's created a rather interesting counter-proposal to KP's teenage dreams. No one is saying either is wrong, it's just interesting to see two of the biggest female stars with such wildly differing takes on feminism and the future. They are, in essence, presenting two possible paths. A girl's gotta have options, after all.mtv.com

Maroon 5 Tourmate Ry Cuming Shares Portraits Of Life On The Road

Armed with a guitar and a vintage Polaroid camera, Australian singer/songwriter Ry Cuming documented his brief stint as opening act for Maroon 5 with a collection of casual snapshots that catch him and his good pals enjoying life on the road. And he decided to share them with us right here! Cuming told MTV News that scoring a supporting slot on Maroon 5's latest tour was a blast. "Getting to walk out and play for 10,000 people, and people being really excited to hear you straight off the bat, it was pretty wonderful," Cuming gushed.
Ry, currently promoting his self-titled debut album, was first introduced to the Maroon men almost eight years ago through a mutual friend. Their love of music and surfing bonded them instantly. Or as Ry puts it, "We just became bros."
Their continuing bromance is evident in Ry's off-the-cuff tour pictures. One portrait captures keyboardist Jesse Carmichael backstage in a silly hat trying to light up a honey pot. "He was pretending like he was an old school settler with his pipe," Cuming explained.
Another pic shows frontman Adam Levine post-show, gesturing toward the camera with the hand-written caption "Gimme some" scribbled underneath. "He was standing in front of me, and I was just trying to snap a candid without him realizing, and then he turned around and gave me that [pose]. It's just that energy after you get offstage." Cuming said.
Ry also had a good time rocking out with Maroon 5's other tourmates, Guster. (You'll notice Guster singer Ryan wearing a Maroon 5 T-shirt in Ry's photo collage.) "It was really nice to be on the road, playing with a group of people [where] every night you're [as] excited to get offstage so you can hang with everybody as much as be onstage." www.mtv.com

Lil Wayne 'Lectures' Drake, Bow Wow To Avoid Prison 'This ain't built for cats like us ... You and Drizzy stay clean,' Bow says Weezy advised during a visit to Rikers.

Lil Wayne's daily prison routine reportedly consists of mundane activities like watching ESPN and chatting on the phone. Despite his seemingly laid-back schedule, the Young Money/ Cash Money leader has cautioned his protégés to steer clear of trouble. Jail is no place for successful rappers, according to Wayne. During a visit to the incarcerated MC, Bow Wow, who joined Weezy's camp last year, said Wayne urged him and Young Money star Drake to stay on their best behavior.
"One thing he told me when I went to visit him, he was like ... 'Bow, this ain't for us, this ain't it. This ain't built for cats like us. They don't understand us, we don't understand them. Don't do it man, just stay out of trouble. You and Drizzy, y'all stay clean, y'all stay doing what y'all do. Y'all can do this forever,' " Bow Wow told Houston's 97.9 The Box. "I knew he meant it, [because] Tune never lectures me like that ... but he was serious."
The 23-year-old rapper said that seeing Wayne locked up was a "humbling experience" and recalled hanging with Weezy before his prison stint.
"In our studio, it's my room ... then Stunna's room then Wayne's room. I'm so used to seeing the Bugatti pull up, I'm so used to ... going over Wayne's house and the chef is always cooking," Bow Wow said. "You don't like seeing your boy like that," Bow lamented.
Similar to how Wayne doled out advice to Bow, the young rapper said he looks out for another member of the extended Young Money/ Cash Money collective: Nicki Minaj. Bow Wow, who stars in the comedy "Lottery Ticket," almost scored the hip-hop diva a role in the summer flick.
"To be honest, Nicki was close to being [the character] 'Nikki' in the movie. I called Nicki and said, 'Yo, I think you should audition for this role.' " Unfortunately, Bow's bid to get Minaj some screen time was unsuccessful: The part eventually went to R&B vixen Teairra Mari. "I thought [Minaj] did good, but unfortunately you know how things don't work out."
Fans won't catch Minaj on the big screen in "Lottery Ticket" but Bow Wow said a big tour featuring Weezy's hitmaking squad will go down once Wayne comes home.
"When he gets out, we definitely plan on this Young Money/ Cash Money tour," Bow said. "[The tour will feature] myself, Nicki, Drizzy, Wayne and the whole entire family." www.mtv.com

Watch A Sneak Peek Of Taylor Swift's 'Mine' Video

We all know that Taylor Swift's new single, "Mine," from her upcoming Speak Now album, is all about her love life. And we all know that her upcoming "Mine" video, shot in Kennebunk, Maine, features Taylor in a gorgeous wedding dress and costars "Black Swan" actor Toby Hemingway as her love interest.

We also get a look at Taylor Swift, who's nominated for a 2010 MTV VMA for Best Female Video, singing and twirling in a dreamy forest where photographs hang from trees. We also see a little girl -- presumably symbolic of a young Taylor Swift -- Taylor and Toby Hemingway walking on the beach, laying on a couch and also fighting. It's an incomplete look at a love story, and we can't wait to see how it turns out.
Watch this exclusive sneak peek of Taylor Swift's "Mine" video, then watch the premiere of "Mine" on Friday, August 27, at 8:30/7:30c on MTV.com.

Taylor Swift Promises 'Theatrics' For 2009 VMA Performance Country crossover star set to perform a new version of 'You Belong With Me.'

Last year, when Taylor Swift attended her first VMAs, she did double duty as a Best New Artist nominee and the fashion correspondent for MTV News' red-carpet preshow. At the 2009 VMAs, to be hosted again by Russell Brand on September 13, Swift will be one of the night's big performers.
"I'm so excited that MTV and the VMAs have invited me to perform, because I think this year's show will be unlike anything they've ever done!" she said of her debut on the VMA stage with an updated version of her new single, "You Belong With Me."
Although Swift lost her Moonman last year to Tokio Hotel, she'll be pulling out all the stops to dazzle the audience this year. "I love incorporating theatrics into my performances, and the VMAs have always allowed artists to run with that," she said. "MTV has been so good to me. And I could not be more excited about this year's VMAs."
Last year, when Swift's song "Teardrops on My Guitar" was nominated for a Moonman, she spoke to MTV News about how excited she was to have her country music being embraced by a pop audience.
"I didn't think it was possible," she said, recalling her reaction to the nomination. "I was so shocked. I started screaming, 'I get to go to the VMAs!' I didn't think I'd get to go to the VMAs. I'm not that cool. As a country artist, I've been pretty unapologetic about it. [But] it's cool to be included." Read: mtv.com

Ke$ha's Animal Tears Apart 'Popology'

hey say a well-rounded education is the key to success, and if that truly is the case, the my schooling is woefully incomplete when it comes to the subject of pop. That's why we bring you "Popology," the guide to modern radio-friendly stars as seen through the eyes of a guy who grew up on punk and metal. In case you missed previous installments, catch up with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Eminem and others here.
This week, Ke$ha conquers the world.
While listening to Animal, the debut album from Ke$ha, something occurred to me: This album is exactly like the recently-leaked WikiLeaks papers about the war in Afghanistan.
No, seriously. Hear me out.
Ke$ha recently told Paper magazine that she would be willing to work on a country album but is "really digging being called, like half-jokingly, a white-girl rapper. I think it's really funny and I'm going to ride that train for a little bit." That's an incredible thing to admit. The thing about the WikiLeaks documents is that they don't really disclose any facts that people didn't already know. It's a lot of information that was already out there and reported on. But the fact that the government is on the record acknowledging it is a pretty big deal. It's one thing for everybody to know that something is true, but it's another thing for the party in question to admit that said thing is true.
Ke$ha's statements about shifting her personality are a lot like that. Everybody pretty much knew that she was a construction of her own design, a hyped-up, extra-loud version of a pop star who covers herself in glitter and rolls around in adrenaline-pumping pop constructions put together by the most talented songwriting ninjas of the day. But for her to actually come out and say, "Hey! It's all a ruse!" makes it feel a little more real.
Under normal circumstances, that would be a big problem. Pop music isn't as concerned about authenticity as people in rock or hip-hop, but people are still expected to put forth some semblance of being "real." But we don't like Ke$ha because she feels more (or less) legitimate than anybody else on the pop landscape. We don't buy tickets to concerts or purchase copies of Animal because of the depth or rawness of her approach. We are on board the Ke$ha train because she is an incredible cypher for songs like "Tik Tok" and "Your Love Is My Drug." Under normal circumstances, the non-single songs on Animal would be completely beside the point.
But Animal wouldn't have sold 850,000 copies and still be in the upper echelons of the Billboard album chart after 29 weeks of release if the songs weren't sticky like peanut butter on the brain. It's not a complicated formula, really, as Ke$ha takes the disco-fueled keyboard washes that Lady Gaga has turned into mainstream pop and added some New Wave warmth, bits of hip-hop and enough sex talk to make Ron Jeremy blush.
I try to make "Popology" about the songs in between the singles, because that tends to be where the story is, but in the case of Animal, it really begins and ends with "Tik Tok." It's one of those songs that sounds awful the first time you hear it, better the third time and atrocious the seventh time. But eventually you find yourself singing it under your breath while you take out the trash, and it somehow makes it onto the mix you listen to when you go running because that moment when the chorus kicks in really gets the blood pumping. It's an incredible construction that I cannot explain, even with the advanced degree in pop science I got from Britney University.
Nothing else on Animal quite matches the majesty of "Tik Tok," but plenty of this stuff comes close. "Take It Off" borrows the melody of the children's rhyme "There's a Place in France," and it is simultaneously enraging (because it's so basic and lazy) and thrilling (because it totally works. In fact, many of the songs on Animal seem to exist specifically to put rock critics out of business. Tracks like "Blah Blah Blah," "Party at a Rich Dude's House" (which, incidentally, sounds like the best faux-metal song that Rivers Cuomo never wrote) and "Blind" seem to say, "We are incredibly vapid and almost entirely empty — but we dare you to not absolutely adore us. We're incredibly catchy and funky and easy to dance to." There has never been an album more lovably loathsome than Animal, and I secretly think that's exactly what Ke$ha was going for.
One more note: Many people write about Ke$ha in the context of rap music, because a lot of what she does on the album could be considered rapping. But it's more of a Toni Basil-esque chant than actual rapping. Plus, she doesn't seem especially concerned with appropriating hip-hop beyond expressing a level of swagger. Musically, Animal borrows from modern dance but also seems to owe a level of debt to (wait for it) the Bloodhound Gang. With some ur-rock skills, an appreciation for rapping and a visceral sense of humor, tracks like "Dinosaur" are as over-the-top as anything from the Beastie Boys' License to Ill era.
And since the Beastie Boys aren't playing that role anymore, it's good that we have Ke$ha around. Somebody has to play the court jester, and it's refreshing when somebody is so willing to throw herself into the part with as much gusto. Ke$ha isn't looking to transcend much of anything, but she is fun. What's not to love? Read: mtv.com

Rihanna: Greenhouse Afterparty Perfection

As for the "Last Girl On Earth" tour, RiRi's opener Ke$ha recently chatted with MTV New about their time on the road together, telling, "It's amazing! She's just a badass. I saw her yesterday, and she spanked me — always keeping me on my toes. She's the sickest." Read: mtv.com

Meanwhile, Kanye was busy tweeting about his time in the studio on Sunday (August 15), as he was clearly proud of himself while writing, "Sometimes I can't control my excitement... So happy... so creative.. in the studio ... ready to create... finished Power verse... more music"
Lining up some big names to help out on his latest studio work, West later tweeted, "\Scheduled studio visits 2day, Nikki Menaj, John Legend, Mos Def, Swiss Beats, Pusha T, Phillip Lim"
All of this comes as Kanye prepares for redemption at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards - which will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9PM ET.Read: celebrity-gossip.net
